High School Scholarship Available, Annual Bowling Tournament set for April 6th

Albuquerque, NM February 12, 2019: The 2018-2019 school year marks the fifth consecutive year that Burqueños for Education and Empowerment (BEE) Scholarships will award college scholarships to New Mexico high school students.

More than 20 students have used their funds toward their professional and collegiate futures. "BEE Scholarships was founded on the idea of helping students attend college that may not have otherwise for financial reasons. The past recipients demonstrate that the ideas that started BEE Scholarships have been successful and are thriving," said BEE Scholarships’ President, Matthew Salas.

Previous scholarship recipients are attending universities across the United States including, Yale, Smith College, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Central New Mexico Community College.

BEE Scholarships’ largest annual fundraiser, an annual bowling tournament, is set to take place at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 6th at the Isleta Casino Fun Connection Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. To find out more information on the Tournament, please visit our events page.

“Our goal in 2019 is to award another five scholarships!” said BEE Scholarships Vice President, Jorge Hernandez. “We’re very much looking forward to another year of volunteering, and fundraising---it’s great to have such a supportive community.”

BEE Scholarships Announces 2018 Se Vale Soñar Scholarship Winners

Se Vale Soñar scholarship program awards 3 laptops to local students

Albuquerque, NM September 17, 2018: Burqueños for Education and Empowerment (BEE) and the Se Vale Soñar Laptop Scholarship Program are excited to announce its inaugural awarding of laptops to local students. Three remarkable young women were awarded laptops, which includes two freshman now attending the University of New Mexico and a senior at Atrisco Heritage Academy. In various ways, the three recipients demonstrated the valuable skills and dedication the Se Vale Soñar scholarship looks for in awarding students. Their inspirational stories are described in detail below.

Jazlyn Tovar

A recent graduate of Atrisco Heritage Academy, now a freshman at UNM, became very excited upon hearing of her award. She was especially excited for her family as she will be the first person to attend college. She wants to do right by her parents. “My biggest goal is to make my parents proud and let them know how capable I am,” said Tovar. “Having the opportunity to show my parents a different experience from my brothers past academics, has made me have the honor to demonstrate them what it's like to love school and to start new chapters,” she continued.

It was very important for Jazlyn to receive a laptop, as she is aware of how valuable they are yet costly to get. “I think it's necessary to own a laptop in college because as I've been informed, a lot of things are handled online other than in person. I believe a laptop will make my life a little easier in college and I will have something less to worry about.”

Daniela Caro Marin

Now a freshman at UNM, Daniela is grateful to have a laptop, especially due to the high costs of purchasing a laptop. “Laptops nowadays can be a bit expensive,” Caro Marin said, continuing, “a laptop is a little too much for [her parents], especially since they also take care of all the expenses of my two younger sisters. I need a laptop so I can use for everything related to school work.” Daniela has goals for herself and has set a high standard, which is largely the reason she was awarded a laptop. “Like every person now a days I have many goals I want to accomplish for myself,” she said of her goals. “My first and main goal not too long ago was to graduate high school with a 3.5 or higher GPA.  Accomplishing my goal was due to all my hard work paying off.” Easily obtained, Daniela now has her goals set on becoming an orthodontist, which her laptop will help her achieve. “I can use it for everything related to school work. I can use the laptop to take notes, write any essays I get assigned, and also to make any PowerPoint presentations. A laptop at this point in my life would be really helpful and useful.”

Yoselyn Peinado

In her senior year attending Atrisco Heritage Academy, Yoselyn knows having a laptop will help her in many ways. “As a high school senior, working on my path toward college [the laptop] would be a great benefit for me,” she said. Her outlook is not just for completing high school, Yoselyn has her sights set on preparing herself for college. “I’m a first generation college student”, continued Yoselyn, and having a laptop “will help me strengthen my research skills and view subj ects from a different perspective. Financially I can’t afford a laptop, which means having one would let me study at home where I can edit documents and submit them.” Yoselyn enters her senior year with dreams of one day becoming a psychiatrist but also has short terms goals of graduating high school and to better herself and her family.
